The Classroom OER Engine is a framework for transforming everyday classroom activity into high-quality open educational resources. It begins from the premise that teaching, peer instruction, critique, and workflow discussion already generate meaningful knowledge, but that this knowledge is rarely captured, structured, or shared beyond the moment it occurs. The Classroom OER Engine formalizes a process for documenting these interactions, synthesizing them through transcription and reflection, and publishing them as accessible, reusable OER. Rather than treating OER as content authored outside the classroom, the framework positions the classroom itself as the engine of knowledge production.

Why This Framework Exists

Open educational resources are often produced outside of the classroom as finished, static materials. While these resources are valuable, this model overlooks the fact that classrooms already generate rich, situated knowledge through discussion, peer teaching, critique, and shared problem-solving. Much of this intellectual labor is ephemeral—spoken, gestural, or informal—and disappears once the class session ends.

At the same time, instructors repeatedly recreate supporting materials such as explanations, examples, transcripts, and accessibility accommodations in isolation. This duplication of effort limits scalability and slows the circulation of effective teaching practices.

The Classroom OER Engine exists to address these gaps by treating classroom activity itself as a primary source of OER. By intentionally capturing and structuring in-class discourse, workflows, and reflections, the framework shifts OER creation from a separate authoring task into an integrated part of teaching and learning. The result is a model that values lived pedagogical practice, supports accessibility by default, and allows knowledge to accumulate and evolve over time.

The Engine (Conceptual Overview)

The Classroom OER Engine operates as a cyclical process that integrates teaching, documentation, and publication into a single system. Rather than treating content creation as a separate task performed before or after instruction, the framework embeds OER generation directly within the rhythm of the course.

The process begins with pre-class preparation, where learners engage with existing materials and arrive with shared context. Class time is then dedicated to peer teaching, discussion, critique, and workflow sharing, shifting the emphasis from content delivery to sense-making and application. These interactions represent the highest-value intellectual work of the course.

During class, this activity is intentionally captured through audio or video recording in a way that is ambient rather than performative. The goal is not polished production, but faithful documentation of how ideas are explained, challenged, and refined in real time. This captured material becomes the raw input for the engine.

Following the session, recordings are transcribed and synthesized to produce accessible text-based representations of the discussion. Key ideas, patterns, and explanations are distilled through reflection and summarization, preserving the structure of the conversation while making it usable beyond the original context.

Finally, the resulting artifacts—transcripts, summaries, diagrams, and recordings—are published as open educational resources. These resources can be reused by future students, adapted by other educators, and iteratively improved through continued classroom use. Each cycle strengthens the system, allowing pedagogical knowledge to accumulate rather than reset each term.

Pedagogical Foundations

Its purpose is to support learning, reflection, and accessibility by capturing how ideas are developed and communicated in authentic classroom settings.

The framework does not position recording or transcription as mechanisms of surveillance. Participation is contextual, transparent, and aligned with established ethical standards for teaching and research. The focus remains on collective knowledge production rather than individual performance, and the use of captured material is guided by consent, care, and pedagogical intent.

The Classroom OER Engine is also not designed to replace instructors, reduce teaching to content generation, or outsource pedagogical judgment to automated systems. While transcription and summarization technologies may be used to support synthesis and accessibility, instructional decisions remain human-centered and context-dependent.

Finally, this framework does not prescribe a single technical configuration or institutional model. It is intentionally flexible, allowing educators to adapt its principles to different disciplines, class sizes, modalities, and resource constraints. The intent is not standardization, but repeatable structure—a way to support meaningful teaching, shared inquiry, and the ongoing creation of open educational resources within the realities of contemporary classrooms.
